Spicing up the Derby Dress Code
One of the most defining features of roller derby is the personalized punk/goth style that goes with it. But sometimes it’s hard to come up with unique ways to personalize your look, and still be comfortable. So how do you marry function with fashion?
Tip One: Personalize your gear. Your helmet and pads are necessary, so give them some zing! Stickers and tape all the way. Neon-colored gaffers tape works great to decorate your helmet. The cool thing about gaffers tape is that it comes off clean, so you can change your design depending on your mood. Use printed duct tape for your skates to really personalize them.
Tip Two: War paint. There’s a million different ways you can go with this. Darken your eyes with some theater makeup for a vamp look, spread the black across your cheeks, or drip some fake blood down your chin. The sky is the limit. Ben Nye is a great source for makeup, and they have some helpful tips too. Warning: be careful not to go too overboard here, you don’t want it dripping in your eyes.
Tip Three: Remember the classics, but don’t depend on them. Black fishnets are a staple in every derby girl’s closet, but sometimes you need a little variety on the legs. Play around with colors: try neons or funky designs. For a cheap alternative, go for some crazy-patterned tights (bonus points if they have holes in them).
Remember, the style is all yours and can go whichever way you wish, but be careful not to get stuck in a rut. Keep your fans on their toes – performance is part of the game.
