WFTDA Seeks your Input: Are we Due for a Roller Derby Specific Helmet?

WFTDA, in a partnership with 187 Killer Pads, seeks your input on helmet perception and effectiveness. Safety is a key issue within roller derby leagues, and the results of this survey could potentially lead to a more roller derby specific helmet design. It is unlikely we will ever see the elimination of helmets in roller derby, as they are absolutely necessary for protecting noggins in hard falls. According to the Rush University Medical Center, even “mild head injuries, where you don’t lose consciousness, can cause permanent behavioral and cognitive problems, such as memory loss, inability to concentrate and sleep disorders.”  But how effective are the helmets that are currently available? There are motorcycle specific helmets, ski and snowboarding helmets, cycling helmets, kayaking helmets, and many others that are considered “sport specific.” Isn’t it time for a roller derby helmet?
